Doom: Dark Ages Preview Unveiled

By EmmaMar 14,2025

Following the phenomenal success of 2016's Doom and its even more refined sequel, Doom Eternal (2020), one might expect Doom: The Dark Ages to reach for even greater heights. Instead, this medieval-tinged prequel delivers a grounded, intensely powerful, and strafe-heavy first-person shooter experience, bringing the high-octane action closer to the heart of Hell's legions.

While the iconic arsenal returns—including the skull-crushing, enemy-pulverizing new weapon showcased in the reveal trailer—The Dark Ages significantly elevates the importance of melee combat. The core electrified gauntlet, a brutal flail, and the standout Shield Saw (throwable, blockable, parry-able, and deflect-able) become essential tools. As game director Hugo Martin stated after a demo, "You're gonna stand and fight."

PlayMartin cites three key influences: the original *Doom*, Frank Miller's *Batman: The Dark Knight Returns*, and Zack Snyder's *300*. This inspiration is evident in the game's design.

The signature Glory Kill system is reimagined. Fatalities are now context-sensitive, adapting to your position and the surrounding chaos. This reflects the intense, 300-esque combat encounters, featuring significantly widened arenas teeming with enemies. Level progression is non-linear; explore freely and tackle objectives in any order. Level design, Martin notes, has been refined, aiming for a consistent one-hour playtime per level.

PlayAddressing criticism of *Doom Eternal*'s Codex-heavy narrative, *The Dark Ages* unfolds through cinematic cutscenes, promising a "summer blockbuster event" storyline that expands the *Doom* universe, focusing on the Slayer's power and the threats against it.

Control simplification is a key focus. The team aims for intuitive controls, avoiding the complexity of Doom Eternal. Melee weapons are equipped individually, streamlining gameplay. The in-game economy is simplified to a single currency (gold), and secrets reward tangible gameplay improvements rather than lore details.

Difficulty is highly customizable, offering sliders for game speed, enemy aggression, and more.

PlayThe giant Atlan mech and cybernetic dragon sequences from the reveal trailer are not isolated events; they offer unique abilities and mini-boss encounters. Importantly, there's no multiplayer mode this time, allowing the team to fully concentrate on the single-player experience.

Martin's decision to shift away from Doom Eternal's successful formula and return to the core principles of the original Doom is a bold one. He explains, "It's just gotta be different…Especially if I loved the game. If I wanna play a Doom game, I wanna feel strong, but I'm OK with changing what that power fantasy is, especially if that change brings it closer to classic Doom."

This deliberate return to classic Doom design has generated immense excitement. The May 15th release date can't come soon enough.
