Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed: A Development Odyssey
Bloomberg recently interviewed Carrie Patel, Avowed's second game director, revealing a tumultuous development journey that involved discarding two years of work. Initially, Obsidian envisioned Avowed as a blend of Destiny and Skyrim, combining cooperative open-world exploration with multiplayer elements.
The 2020 teaser trailer, while exciting for fans, belied the game's unfinished state. A decision was made to completely restart development shortly after. The teaser now serves as a reminder of a vastly different, unreleased prototype.
Patel, taking the director's reins after the reboot, fundamentally reshaped the project. The Skyrim and Destiny influences were dropped, along with the open-world design and multiplayer features. Obsidian returned to its preferred zone-based structure, focusing on a strong single-player narrative deeply rooted in the Pillars of Eternity universe.
This mid-development restart presented monumental challenges, comparable to filmmaking without a script. Teams navigated uncertainty as leadership solidified a unified vision. Despite these obstacles, Avowed's development continued for another four years before its eventual release.
