"Hunger: Multiplayer RPG with Unique Extraction Loop"

By AuroraJun 21,2025

Extraction shooters have become increasingly common, making it tough for any new title to truly stand out. That’s exactly why I was excited to sit down with the team at Good Fun Corporation to get an exclusive early look at *Hunger*, their upcoming Unreal Engine 5-powered first-person action-RPG that blends zombie survival with deep RPG mechanics and a compelling extraction loop.

While the genre is saturated, *Hunger* doesn’t want to be seen as just another extraction shooter—and after seeing an impressive early build, I can say it’s not. The developers are aiming for something more layered and immersive than what's typically found in the crowded Steam landscape. Although the Early Access release date remains under wraps, the game already shows promise of being a standout experience.

Two key elements immediately caught my attention: the visual design and the technical polish. Creative director Maximilian Rea described *Hunger*’s aesthetic as “Renaissance gothic,” which perfectly captures the blend of early firearms, brutal melee weapons, and environments ranging from grimy villages to opulent castles. Visually, the game impresses with stunning foliage, realistic lighting, and detailed textures—making it one of the most visually striking uses of Unreal Engine 5 I’ve seen yet.

As for gameplay, while my demo was hands-off, the structure is promising. Drawing inspiration from both *ARC Raiders* and *Escape from Tarkov*, the game starts players in the Outer Ramparts—a peaceful hub zone within the Chateau where players and NPCs gather. Similar to *Destiny*, you can switch to third-person here, though combat always stays in first-person. You can interact with quirky characters like Piro, the eccentric shopkeeper who sells gear on a tray around his neck, or Louis, the Stashmaster who helps manage your inventory and offers side quests. Expedition Master Reynauld, identifiable by his missing fingers, sets up raid missions—known as expeditions.

The initial Early Access launch will feature three one-square-kilometer maps—Jacques Bridge, Sombre Forest, and Sarlat Farm—each with underground dungeons. Each map supports six weather variations, including clear noon, foggy noon, sunset, and sunrise, with plans to expand dynamic systems post-launch. The team aims to deliver around 50–60 hours of content before unlocking the Cauldron, a new area where players choose their profession. There are six total professions—three gathering (Scavenging, Conservator, Naturalist) and three crafting (Metallurgy, Gunsmithing, Cooking)—and players can select two at once.

Lore plays a significant role in *Hunger*. Missives and Maps come in Common, Rare, and Legendary tiers, offering XP and story progression when extracted and read back in the Chateau. The developers aim to weave narrative into every aspect of the game, including environmental storytelling and NPC dialogue.

Zombies, known as the Hunger, come in various forms, each with unique behaviors and attack styles. Stealth is encouraged since melee attacks remain silent, while gunfire attracts more enemies. For example, the Bloater explodes into toxic gas upon death, and Shambler hits cause bleed damage. With 33 weapons across melee and ranged categories—including exotic ammo types that add special effects—combat feels varied and strategic.

For those craving competition, dedicated PvP modes will be available. Additionally, a Mastery Tree system allows players to earn points from levels 10 to 100, spread across four branches: Physiology, Survival, Martial, and Cunning—ensuring multiple progression paths beyond PvP alone.

Whether playing solo or in duos, players won’t be at a disadvantage. According to Rea, "Solo or duo play is actually one of the fastest ways to progress." Cosmetic rewards are also unlocked through leveling, boss kills, and other achievements, with options available for every weapon and bag.

Priced at $30 for the base edition, *Hunger* will not be free-to-play, avoiding potential pay-to-win pitfalls. There are no battle passes planned, although a "Support the Developers" edition will offer additional cosmetic items for a higher price point.

Session length varies, with the shortest expeditions lasting around 30–35 minutes, making *Hunger* ideal for quick, satisfying play sessions. Even if you die, all efforts contribute to character progression, ensuring no run feels wasted. As Rea explained, “If they've played for an hour, we want them to feel like they've meaningfully moved the ball forward for their character.”

Though still in development, *Hunger* has already shown immense potential. Coming from the creators of *Hell Let Loose*, this project could redefine what an extraction-based RPG looks like. Stay tuned to [ttpp] for more updates as the game approaches its Early Access release in 2025.
