Twenty-five years after its debut, the origin story behind the name "Super Smash Bros." is finally revealed by its creator, Masahiro Sakurai.
Sakurai Unveils the "Smash Bros." Naming Process
Super Smash Bros., Nintendo's celebrated crossover fighting game, features a diverse cast of characters from across the company's iconic franchises. However, the game's title is somewhat misleading, as few characters are actually brothers. Sakurai recently shed light on the naming convention in his YouTube series.
He explained that the name reflects the game's core concept: "friends settling minor disagreements." Former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata played a crucial role in solidifying the name.
Sakurai recounted a brainstorming session where various names were proposed. A meeting with Shigesato Itoi, creator of the Mother/Earthbound series, helped finalize the title. Iwata's contribution was the "brothers" element, explaining that while the characters lacked familial ties, the term conveyed a sense of friendly rivalry rather than outright conflict.
Beyond the naming, Sakurai shared personal anecdotes about his relationship with Iwata, including Iwata's direct involvement in programming the original Super Smash Bros. prototype, then known as Dragon King: The Fighting Game, for the Nintendo 64.
