After a 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, Call of Duty's Multiplayer Creative Director, has departed Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Reisdorf played a pivotal role in the development of Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer, including its live seasonal content and modes.
Reisdorf's journey with Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, encompassed key developments across various Call of Duty installments. His early work on Modern Warfare 3 included memorable sequences like Soap's gurney scene in the "Blood Brothers" mission. He also significantly impacted the "boots on the ground" era, contributing to Advanced Warfare's gameplay mechanics (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads), weapon designs, and map creation. While he acknowledges some design choices, like Advanced Warfare's "Pick 13" system, weren't perfect, he learned valuable lessons from those experiences.
His involvement extended to Call of Duty: WW2, where he helped rectify the initial limitations of the "Divisions" system, and Call of Duty: Vanguard, where he favored traditional three-lane maps prioritizing engaging gameplay over strict military realism.
His most recent contribution was as Creative Director for Modern Warfare 3 (2023) multiplayer. This included overseeing live seasons, such as the introduction of Snowfight and Infectious Holiday modes in Season 1, and the development of over 20 post-launch modes. He even revisited and enhanced classic Modern Warfare 2 maps, adding subtle details like Shepherd's skull to the Rust map.
Reisdorf's Twitter announcement on January 13th confirmed his departure on January 10th, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career. While moving on from Call of Duty, his statement suggests a continued presence within the gaming industry.
