Hideo Kojima's spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, won't launch for at least five to six more years.
The renowned creator revealed this timeline in an interview with Le Film Francais, explaining that his filmmaking ambitions remain on hold until after completing his first "action espionage" title since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.
"Since becoming independent, I've received numerous serious offers to develop games at my studio," Kojima stated, as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX. "Beyond Death Stranding 2, we're working on Physint, which will require another five or six years."
The visionary director added: "Perhaps then I could finally pursue filmmaking. Cinema shaped my childhood. Directing would be my tribute to it. Also, time matters—I'd rather direct while I'm still relatively young!"
PlayStation Studios' Herman Hulst first announced Physint in January 2024, though details remain scarce. Initially, Kojima suggested it might also exist as a film, but later clarified on X/Twitter that the project represents an advanced form of "Digital Entertainment" merging cinematic quality with interactive gameplay.
This forms part of Kojima Productions' busy slate, including Death Stranding 2 and OD—a new Xbox-exclusive IP featuring contributions from actress Hunter Schafer and director Jordan Peele. The studio also oversees A24's Death Stranding film adaptation.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach launches June 26, with lead actor Norman Reedus confirming to IGN he would "naturally reprise his role" in the upcoming film version.
Following recent reveals about discarded game concepts—including a 'Forgetting Game' where players lose skills during extended breaks—Kojima disclosed he's prepared a USB drive containing game ideas for his team to develop posthumously.
