Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Crafting Team-Based Action Game with Fighting, MOBA, and Frog-Type Influences

Sony has announced the creation of a new PlayStation studio called teamLFG, which originated from Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, expressed his excitement about teamLFG's ambitious incubation project.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their debut game is described as a team-based action game that blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game aims to foster a sense of friendship, community, and belonging among players.

teamLFG emphasizes creating immersive multiplayer worlds where players can enjoy countless hours of gameplay, learning, playing, and mastering the game. The studio plans to involve the community in the development process through early access playtests and aims to remain agile in responding to player feedback both before and after launch, ensuring the game and its community continue to grow over time.

"We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," teamLFG stated.

teamLFG's project was spun out of Bungie amid significant layoffs last year. Following the Sony acquisition, Bungie reportedly struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting around 100 employees in November 2023, and another 220 in 2024, which was 17% of the studio's workforce. Additionally, 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these changes that the incubation project was announced.

A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in forcing improvements to Destiny 2. Since then, Bungie has revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and confirmed the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
