Sony's AI Aloy prototype revealed in leak

By MiaSep 16,2025

A confidential Sony video leak shows PlayStation's exploration of AI-driven game characters, with Horizon's Aloy serving as a tech demo prototype.

The Verge uncovered internal footage allegedly from PlayStation Studios' R&D team, featuring Horizon protagonist Aloy responding dynamically through AI-powered dialogue and animations. Though swiftly taken down after Sony's copyright claim – strengthening its authenticity – glimpses reveal intriguing experimental technology.

The Tech Behind Digital Aloy

The demo showcases conversational AI built on OpenAI's Whisper for speech recognition, GPT-4/Llama 3 handling responses, Sony's proprietary EVS voice synthesis, and Mockingbird facial animation tech. Yet limitations remain clear – the robotic voice lacks Ashly Burch's iconic performance, and stiff animations fall short of genuine expressiveness.

SIE engineering director Sharwin Raghoebardajal demonstrates the system through eerily existential exchanges:

"How's your mother search progressing?" prompts Raghoebardajal.

"Discovering I'm Doctor Sobeck's clone clarified my purpose," responds the AI Aloy flatly.

The unsettling contrast peaks when the demo shifts to actual Forbidden West gameplay – where players traditionally control Aloy – now conversing with their own avatar about her artificial origins.

PlayStation's AI Ambitions Amid Industry Skepticism

Sony clarifies this remains strictly internal R&D, with Guerrilla Games assisting the prototype. "Just a glimpse of possibilities," Raghoebardajal notes cautiously.

The leak emerges amid industry-wide AI experimentation – from Microsoft's Muse concept generator to Capcom testing procedural environment creation. However, early implementations face criticism:

  • Keyword Studios' fully AI-developed prototype failed commercially
  • Activision faced backlash over AI-generated Call of Duty assets
  • Ethical debates continue regarding creative labor displacement

PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash defends the direction: "Gen Alpha expects dynamic interactions – NPCs responding uniquely to player choices creates meaningful personalization."

The demo suggests PlayStation's balancing act – pioneering emergent technologies while preserving the soul of human-crafted experiences. Whether these digital Aloys ever leave Sony's labs remains an open question.
