PS5 Console Power Preferences Insights Unveiled

Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead, according to Sony. This surprising statistic, revealed by Cory Gasaway, Vice President of Game, Product, and Player Experiences at Sony Interactive Entertainment, highlights a significant design challenge for console developers. The revelation emerged during an interview with Stephen Totilo, focusing on the design philosophy behind the PS5's Welcome Hub, introduced in 2024.

The Welcome Hub, born from a PlayStation hackathon, aimed to create a unified user experience despite varying player preferences, including the significant portion of users who avoid rest mode. Gasaway noted a 50/50 split between users powering down completely and utilizing rest mode in the US, with the Welcome Hub's design adapting to present either the PS5 Explore page or the user's most recently played game, depending on location. This suggests a focus on providing a consistent, customizable starting point for all PS5 users.

While no single definitive reason explains the widespread avoidance of rest mode, anecdotal evidence suggests potential issues. Some users report internet connectivity problems when rest mode is enabled, preferring to keep their consoles fully powered on for downloads. Others, however, experience no such issues and utilize the feature without problems. Regardless of the cause, Gasaway's insights offer valuable context into the complexities of designing intuitive user interfaces for modern gaming consoles. The 50% figure underscores the importance of considering diverse user behaviors and preferences in the development process.
