Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced
FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the established Soulsborne formula for Elden Ring Nightreign: the absence of an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki in a recent IGN Japan interview, is purely pragmatic. The fast-paced, multiplayer-centric design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the traditional message system.
The asynchronous message system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has fostered a rich community experience, whether offering helpful guidance, playful misdirection, or humorous observations. However, this beloved feature will not be present in Nightreign. Ishizaki explained that the intense, shorter gameplay sessions wouldn't accommodate the time needed for reading and writing messages.
Maintaining Asynchronous Elements
Despite the omission of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, a staple of the series, will return, improved to allow players to not only witness the deaths of others but also loot their spectral remains.
A More Focused Experience
The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for a more streamlined and intense multiplayer experience. The decision to structure Nightreign around a three-day timeframe further supports this goal. Ishizaki described the aim as creating a "compressed RPG" – a varied, action-packed experience with minimal downtime.
Nightreign, revealed at TGA 2024, is slated for a 2025 release, though a specific date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
