Crytek, facing challenging market conditions, announced layoffs impacting approximately 60 employees, or 15% of its 400-person workforce. This decision, while painful, was deemed necessary for the company's long-term financial sustainability, despite the growth of Hunt: Showdown.
In a statement from founder Avni Yerli, Crytek explained that after halting development of the next Crysis game in Q3 2024 and shifting resources to Hunt: Showdown, cost-cutting measures proved insufficient. The layoffs affect various development and support teams, with Crytek committing to providing severance packages and career support to affected individuals.
Yerli emphasized Crytek's continued commitment to Hunt: Showdown, highlighting its strength as a gaming service and promising ongoing content updates. The company also reaffirmed its dedication to the CRYENGINE.
The news follows the previously unannounced cancellation of a battle royale-inspired Crysis project, codenamed Crysis Next, which was scrapped in favor of Crysis 4, announced in January 2022. Crysis 4's development has been paused.
The Crysis franchise, renowned for its visually stunning graphics, innovative nanosuit abilities, and open-world design, last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters of earlier titles have been released, substantial updates on Crysis 4 have been scarce since its initial announcement three years prior. The original Crysis, released in 2007, famously became a benchmark for PC gaming performance, giving rise to the popular phrase, "But can it run Crysis?"
