Assassin's Creed Shadows Censorship in Japan

Assassin’s Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) has undergone alterations for its Japanese release, receiving a CERO Z rating. This rating necessitates the removal of dismemberment and decapitation, impacting the game's content significantly. This article details the differences between the Japanese and international versions.

CERO Z Rating and Content Changes

Ubisoft Japan announced via Twitter (X) that AC Shadows' Japanese version will differ from its North American and European counterparts due to the CERO Z rating. This rating, issued by Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), restricts the game's sale and distribution to individuals aged 18 and above.

Specific changes include the complete removal of dismemberment and decapitation sequences. Depictions of wounds and severed body parts have also been modified. While some alterations to the Japanese audio dub have been confirmed, the specifics remain undisclosed. The international version will offer players the option to toggle dismemberment and decapitation.

CERO's Strict Standards and Previous Instances

The CERO Z rating is not unprecedented for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Many previous installments, including AC Valhalla and AC Origins, have received the same rating due to their violent content. CERO's stringent guidelines regarding gore and dismemberment have consistently presented challenges for game developers seeking a Japanese release. Notable examples include The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake, both of which were withheld from the Japanese market due to CERO's requirements.

Yasuke's Description Altered

Further changes affect the in-game description of Yasuke, a key protagonist. Japanese-language versions on Steam and the PlayStation Store have replaced the term "samurai" (侍) with "騎当千" (Ikki tousen), meaning "a warrior who can face a thousand enemies." This follows previous criticism of referring to Yasuke as "the black samurai," a historically sensitive topic in Japan. Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, previously stated the company's focus on broad audience appeal, rather than pushing specific agendas.

Release Date and Availability

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on March 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Further details can be found on the official Assassin’s Creed Shadows webpage.
