In a recent video titled "A Bad Month," popular YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, shared his disappointment over the cancellation of a Soma animated show he had been working on for a year. Soma, a critically acclaimed survival horror sci-fi game developed by Frictional Games, was released in 2015 and remains one of Jacksepticeye's favorite games.
Jacksepticeye expressed his deep connection to Soma, citing its exceptional storytelling as a major reason for his interest in creating an animated series based on the game. He had been in discussions with the game's developers for a year, and they were on the brink of entering full production when the project abruptly fell apart. An unnamed party decided to take the project in a "different direction," leaving Jacksepticeye "quite upset" and reluctant to delve into the specifics of what happened.
The cancellation has significantly impacted Jacksepticeye's plans for 2025, as he had intended to focus much of his creative energy on the project. The sudden halt left him questioning his priorities and future content, adding to a challenging period where multiple projects had either been canceled or stalled. He expressed frustration over the time and effort invested without tangible results, emphasizing the emotional toll it took on him.
Following Soma, Frictional Games released two more entries in their Amnesia series: "Amnesia: Rebirth" in 2020 and "Amnesia: The Bunker" in 2023. In a statement made after the release of "Amnesia: The Bunker," Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip mentioned the company's intention to shift focus from horror to explore other emotional qualities in their games. Grip highlighted the importance of immersive experiences and emotional depth, suggesting a broader range of themes beyond traditional horror elements.
