Nintendo is currently deliberating on various factors to determine the price of the upcoming Switch 2 console. While industry analysts have predicted a launch price of $400 for the Switch 2 expected later this year, Nintendo has not yet made an official announcement regarding the pricing.
In a recent investor Q&A session, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, addressed the considerations influencing the pricing strategy for the Switch 2. He emphasized the impact of inflation and shifts in exchange rates since the original Switch's launch in 2017. "We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017," Furukawa stated.
Furukawa further elaborated on the need to consider consumer expectations regarding the price range of Nintendo products. "We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account," he added.
The original Nintendo Switch was launched at $299.99 and maintained that price for several years. With nearly eight years having passed, it's crucial to assess what consumers now expect from Nintendo's pricing. Competitors like Sony and Microsoft have adjusted their current-gen console prices in response to increased costs, inflation, and currency fluctuations.
Analysts suggest a $400 price point for the Switch 2, which would be higher than the $300 launch price of the original Switch, a price still in effect outside of promotional offers. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is priced at $350, and the Nintendo Switch Lite at $200. Although details about the Switch 2's specs and features remain limited beyond the initial reveal, indications point toward a larger, more powerful next-gen console, making $400 a plausible price.

Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, where they will provide a more detailed look at the console following its initial reveal last month. The reveal showcased the Switch 2's form factor, hinted at a new Mario Kart game, possibly Mario Kart 9, and introduced a new 'mouse' mode for the Joy-Con controllers.
However, several questions about the Switch 2 remain unanswered, including the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, the console's processing power, and the purpose of its new ports. Nintendo plans to hold Switch 2 hands-on events in various cities worldwide to give gamers a chance to experience the console firsthand.
Meanwhile, Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo has no intention of altering the price of the original Switch, despite the impending launch of the Switch 2, indicating stability in the pricing of the existing model.
