Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Unique Path Away from Avengers, X-Men

By SarahMay 15,2025

Ryan Reynolds has expressed skepticism about Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the character's conclusion. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This statement comes despite the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and the character's clear desire to join the Avengers within the film.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday has already confirmed a strong presence of X-Men characters, with actors like Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden set to reprise their roles. This lineup has led to speculation about whether Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. However, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the cast reveal, and his comments indicate that a formal promotion of Deadpool to either team is unlikely.

Instead, Reynolds hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo in a supporting role, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. Looking ahead, Reynolds mentioned he is currently writing a new project that involves an "ensemble," but he remained tight-lipped about the details. This suggests that future Deadpool projects might continue to focus on cameos and unique collaborations, potentially including characters like Snipes' Blade and Channing Tatum's Gambit, who appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast list has sparked much speculation, little else is confirmed. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, stating it would evoke the classic Marvel feeling. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd and Joseph Quinn, have also shared their excitement. A recent set photo leak has fueled further speculation, with some fans worried about the implications for the X-Men. Additionally, there are rumors that Oscar Isaac might appear as Moon Knight, especially after he withdrew from Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the revealed cast is not exhaustive, hinting at more surprises to come.
