With *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered* now available, millions of players are diving back into Bethesda’s iconic open-world RPG. Longtime fans are once again sharing tips and tricks with newcomers who may have missed the game’s original release two decades ago.
Oblivion Remastered is a remaster rather than a full remake, as Bethesda has clearly stated. As such, many of the original design choices—including some dated mechanics—have been preserved. One of the most notable and often-discussed features is the game’s level scaling system.
Oblivion’s original lead designer has since referred to this system as a “mistake,” yet it remains intact in the remastered version. The system causes loot quality to scale based on your character’s level at the time of acquisition. Similarly, enemy strength and difficulty also adjust according to your level, which can create long-term balance issues if not managed carefully.
This particular mechanic has led veteran players to issue renewed advice to those just starting out, especially when it comes to one of the game’s earliest major locations: Castle Kvatch.
