Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games

By EmilyMay 12,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 has finally arrived, and as previously reported, it boasts impressive backward compatibility with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is taking it a step further by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements go beyond mere graphical improvements and framerate boosts, promising a richer gaming experience.

Nintendo has categorized the games playable on the Switch 2 into three main types. First, there are native Switch 2 games, developed specifically for this system and not playable on the original Switch. Second, there are compatible Switch 1 games, which you can play directly on the Switch 2 using their existing cartridges. Finally, there are Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles, featuring new features and performance upgrades when played on the Switch 2.

This categorization does not include the classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, which encompasses titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct revealed that Nintendo is keen on providing additional value for those who opt for the Switch 2 Edition of a Switch 1 game. For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree, originally a Switch game, will come with a new feature called Jamboree TV in its Switch 2 Edition. This feature leverages the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and the optional Switch 2 USB-C camera, enhancing the gaming experience.

In addition to these innovations, the Switch 2 Edition will offer upgraded resolutions up to 1440p in TV mode, improved frame rates, new minigames, and enhanced online functions. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will support Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and multiple display modes, including a Quality Mode (60fps at 4K when docked, 1080p at 60fps in handheld) and a Performance Mode (120fps at 1080p when docked, 120fps at 720p in handheld), with all modes supporting HDR.

Other Switch 2 Edition games will include new story content, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will incorporate the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, offering in-game guides and assistance. Some games, like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will primarily receive performance and resolution enhancements.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, with the first batch of Switch 2 Edition games launching around the same time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have their Switch 2 Editions available on the console's launch day, June 5, 2025.

Subsequent releases include Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land's update on August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are also expected to launch their Switch 2 Editions sometime in 2025, though specific dates have not been announced yet.

Play**How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?** -----------------------------------------

The cost of Switch 2 Editions depends on whether you already own the Switch 1 version of the game. If you don't, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, which will be easily identifiable by its distinctive red-colored physical game case. Digital versions will also feature a prominent Switch 2 logo.

If you own the Switch 1 version and wish to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition, you'll need to buy an upgrade pack from Nintendo. These packs will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though the exact cost of these packs has not been disclosed yet.

Notably, some upgrade packs, such as those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and a classic game library.
