Nintendo Delays Live-Action The Legend of Zelda Movie

Nintendo has officially postponed the release of its highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda film, as confirmed by the company today.

Shigeru Miyamoto, a legendary figure at Nintendo, shared an update on social media this afternoon stating that "additional time" will be utilized to enhance the movie's overall quality.

Originally scheduled for March 26, 2027, The Legend of Zelda film is now set to debut on May 7, 2027 — a slot previously occupied by the delayed Avengers: Secret Wars.

Play"This is Miyamoto," the statement reads. "Due to production requirements, we are adjusting the release date of The Legend of Zelda live-action film to May 7, 2027.

"It will launch a few weeks later than initially announced, allowing us extra time to ensure the movie reaches its highest potential. We appreciate your patience."

Nintendo provided no further details regarding the scheduling shift, but by adopting Avengers: Secret Wars' former date, Nintendo capitalizes on Marvel's prime release window while avoiding competition from other major titles slated for March.

The Zelda film's previous date was just one week after Sonic The Hedgehog 4, scheduled for March 19, 2027, positioning it directly against Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars has been moved to December 17, 2027.

With less than two years remaining until the Zelda movie hits theaters, details about the project remain scarce. To date, there is no information regarding casting or plot specifics.

First revealed in November 2023, the film is being produced by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. Sony Pictures Entertainment will manage distribution and co-finance the production alongside Nintendo. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is penning the screenplay, while Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) directs.

In May 2024, following his work on the CG-intensive Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Ball noted that an entirely motion-capture Zelda film "probably isn't my preference." Instead, he emphasized that The Legend of Zelda should feel "grounded" and "real."

"I want to deliver what fans desire most," Ball explained in another interview. "This franchise holds immense importance for many, so I aim to create a serious, authentic movie that offers an escape... [It must] feel tangible — something substantial, cool, yet fun and whimsical."
