The disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of Halo hasn't deterred Microsoft from exploring more adaptations of its iconic video games. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's gaming chief, shared with Variety that fans should anticipate more projects in the future. This statement comes as anticipation builds for the release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the popular Microsoft-owned sandbox game, starring Jack Black. Should the movie succeed, it's poised to kickstart a series of sequels.
Microsoft's venture into film and TV adaptations continues with the success of the Fallout series on Prime Video, which is gearing up for its second season. However, the TV version of Halo, despite its high budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Spencer emphasized to Variety that Microsoft has learned valuable lessons from these experiences, boosting their confidence to pursue further adaptations.
"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer remarked. He highlighted that the company's journey through projects like Halo and Fallout is building a foundation for future endeavors. "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously, we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’"
As for what's next, speculation is rife. Netflix announced a live-action film and an animated TV series based on Gears of War in 2022, although updates have been scarce since, except for MCU star Dave Bautista's interest in portraying Marcus Fenix. Given the success of Fallout, could Prime Video be interested in adapting The Elder Scrolls or Skyrim? Amazon already has a strong presence in fantasy with The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, so this remains a tantalizing possibility.
Sony's successful adaptation of Gran Turismo has led to speculation about whether Microsoft might greenlight a Forza Horizon movie. With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, there's potential for a Call of Duty movie or another attempt at adapting Warcraft. Jason Schreier's book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," revealed that Activision Blizzard had been working on series for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo with Netflix, but these projects fell through. Could Microsoft bring them back to life?
On a lighter note, Microsoft now owns the Crash Bandicoot franchise, which could be ripe for an animated movie or TV series, following the success of Mario and Sonic adaptations. The upcoming reboot of Fable in 2026 also presents an opportunity for an adaptation. And, could Microsoft give Halo another shot, this time with a big-budget movie?
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in this space. Sony has enjoyed success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal, which is set for a second season. Sony has also announced adaptations for Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima, with the God of War TV show planned for two seasons. Meanwhile, Nintendo boasts the most successful video game adaptation with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and is working on a sequel and a live-action The Legend of Zelda.
