The beloved Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a prolonged hiatus, but recent comments from Killzone composer Joris de Man have reignited hopes for its revival. In an exclusive interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man shared his longing for the return of the series.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's tricky because I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The form in which Killzone could make a comeback remains open to interpretation. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more appealing to fans than an entirely new installment.
"I think a remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," de Man noted. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone games are known for their slower, more deliberate pacing and a weightier feel, contrasting with faster-paced titles like Call of Duty. Notably, Killzone 2 faced criticism for its perceived input lag, which affected its responsiveness on the PlayStation 3. The series is also celebrated for its dark, gritty, and atmospheric visuals and tone.
In a separate interview with the Washington Post, it appears that Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, has shifted its focus to the Horizon franchise. However, with over a decade passing since the release of Killzone Shadow Fall, the prospect of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter series—continues to excite many fans. Despite uncertainties, enthusiasts can take comfort in knowing that de Man is among those rooting for its return.
