Every superhero narrative thrives on its villains, and in *Captain America: Brave New World*, fans were introduced to The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. The character, brought to life through practical effects and makeup, showcases a visibly mutated appearance, though the final design deviates slightly from its comic book origins.
Blue Whale Studios, responsible for crafting The Leader's look for the MCU film, recently shared insights into their initial design concept for Sam Sterns’ alter ego, which hewed more closely to the comics. Based in Atlanta, the special effects company initially envisioned a more sickly appearance for the character, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. This design, showcased on their Instagram, is more straightforward and lacks the intricate mutation details seen in the movie's final version. Additionally, they posted a video demonstrating the application of prosthetics on Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse into the character's creation process.
"We were originally commissioned to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader, portrayed by the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson, in *Captain America: Brave New World*," Blue Whale Studios stated. "As is common in filmmaking, the narrative evolved, leading to a shift in creative direction during reshoots. Ultimately, our design was not used in the final cut. Nevertheless, we take immense pride in our work.
"Inspired by the original comic book illustrations, we crafted a look that was both grounded and iconic—faithful to the source while achieving a refined, natural realism. We were particularly pleased with how lightweight and comfortable the final makeup was for the actor, a testament to our team's dedication and expertise."
The initial design closely mirrors The Leader's debut in the Marvel comic universe, first seen in *Tales to Astonish #62* in 1964. Interestingly, the final film design aligns more with the character's portrayal in 2018's *Immortal Hulk*.
The Leader's introduction as a potential MCU villain was hinted at in 2008's *The Incredible Hulk*, where Sam Sterns is exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-laced blood. Initially a normal human, this exposure sets the stage for his transformation seen at the beginning of *Brave New World*.
Last May, reports emerged that *Captain America: Brave New World* underwent reshoots to integrate a new villainous character, Sidewinder, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in *Breaking Bad*, *Star Wars*, and *The Boys*. Esposito leads the Serpent Society in the film.
Ahead of the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed his role had been excised following extensive script rewrites and subsequent reshoots.
