The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a well-known video game modder, announced on Twitter that he'd been asked to remove links to the patch he shared online, which he has since done.
McDonald referenced a past encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he jokingly mentioned creating the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Yoshida's reaction was reportedly laughter.
Bloodborne's status as an untouched title, despite its critical and commercial success, is a significant point of contention among fans. The lack of an official next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel fuels ongoing demand. McDonald's mod attempted to fill this void, but recent advancements in PS4 emulation, specifically ShadPS4, offer a near-remaster experience on PC, running at 60fps. This development might have prompted Sony's more assertive action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.
Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's inactivity in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, cherishes Bloodborne deeply and doesn't want anyone else to work on it, even for a simple update or remaster. Yoshida suggested the PlayStation team respects Miyazaki's wishes.
Despite nearly a decade since its release, Bloodborne remains largely untouched. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about the game, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on more modern hardware would be beneficial. The situation leaves the future of Bloodborne uncertain, yet still hopeful for many fans.
