Steam Player Count Surges Following Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has just rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking a significant milestone in the RPG's journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 concludes the series of updates for this beloved game. The release has sparked a notable increase in player engagement, propelling BG3's concurrent player count from around 60,000 to an impressive 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam’s top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on the surge in players following Patch 8’s release via Twitter (X) on April 22. He emphasized the thriving mod support for BG3, hinting that it allows the studio to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe, paving the way for a new venture.

Consequently, D&D's proprietors, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate saga without Larian Studios. They are actively discussing potential collaborations with other studios to develop a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, which was first teased in a November 2024 Steam blog post, has finally arrived with a host of new features. Players can now explore 12 new subclasses, utilize a new photo mode, and enjoy cross-play functionality, among other enhancements.
