Pesten With Cards

Pesten With Cards is a classic Dutch card game whose name translates to Bullying With Cards.

This classic Dutch game, literally meaning Bullying With Cards, is similar to games played elsewhere like Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, or Uno. The goal is to be the first player to play all your cards. Upon playing your final card, you must announce "Last Card" to win. Forgetting this announcement results in a penalty where you must draw two cards.

The game is played with one or more decks that include jokers. Each player is dealt seven cards, and the remaining cards form a face-down stock pile. The top card of the stock is revealed to start the discard pile. Play proceeds clockwise. If the initial revealed card is a "Pest-card" (special action card), its effect is applied as if the dealer had played it.

On your turn, you must play one card onto the discard pile. You can only play a card that matches either the number or the suit of the top card. The exceptions are Jokers and Jacks, which can be played on any card. If you cannot play, you must draw one card from the stock. If the drawn card is playable, you may choose to play it immediately or keep it in your hand.

-Last card

When you have only one card left after playing, you must declare "Last Card" by clicking the designated button above your hand. This alerts other players. If you forget to announce and play your last card to win, you incur a penalty of drawing two cards, and your final card is not played. Announcing "Last Card" incorrectly also results in a two-card penalty. You can press the "Last Card" button at any time, even when it's not your turn, to ensure you remember to declare before playing your final card.

You win the round by successfully playing your last card onto the pile. However, your final card cannot be a special action card (see below).

-Special Cards

Certain cards trigger special actions when played. The card's number or type determines the effect. As Dutch gameplay has many variations, you can configure these actions in the game options to match your preferred rules. Available actions include:

- Joker

The next player must draw five cards. If that player also holds a Joker, they can play it, forcing the following player to draw ten cards. Each consecutive Joker adds five more cards to the draw. A player who must draw cards cannot play that turn, and play passes to the next player.

- Two

The next player must draw two cards. If that player has a Two, they can play it, making the following player draw four cards instead. Each Two adds two more cards to the draw. If enabled in options, a Joker may be played on a Two, adding five cards to the draw. A Two cannot be played on a Joker. A player who draws cards cannot play that turn.

- Seven

The player who plays a Seven must immediately play another card on top of it. Remember to declare "Last Card" if this subsequent play leaves you with one card. If you cannot play a valid card on the Seven, you must draw a card from the stock.

- Eight

The next player's turn is skipped, and the player after them goes next. In a two-player game, this means you get another turn (similar to a Seven).
