'It Does Real Harm to Artists of All Kinds' — Balatro Dev Localthunk Steps In to Resolve AI Art Reddit Fiasco

Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit concerning a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The controversy began with DrTankHead, a former moderator of the main Balatro subreddit and current moderator of its NSFW counterpart. DrTankHead had previously stated that AI art would be permitted on both subreddits, provided it was properly labeled. This statement, however, contradicted the views of Localthunk and publisher Playstack.

Localthunk subsequently clarified on Bluesky and the Balatro subreddit that neither they nor Playstack endorse AI-generated imagery. They stated their belief that AI art harms artists and announced DrTankHead's removal from the main subreddit's moderation team. Future subreddit rules will explicitly prohibit AI-generated images.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the subreddit's previous rules regarding AI content lacked clarity, leading to misinterpretations. The remaining moderators are working to revise the rules to avoid future confusion.

DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they don't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they are considering a schedule where non-NSFW AI-generated art might be permitted on specific days. One user responded by suggesting DrTankHead take a break from Reddit.

The debate surrounding generative AI is currently a major point of contention within the video game industry. Recent events highlight the ongoing tension between AI's potential and its limitations. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-driven game underscored AI's inability to replace human talent. Despite this, major players like EA and Capcom are actively exploring AI's applications in game development, while Activision recently acknowledged using AI for some assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, sparking controversy.
