Fans of the Marvel universe and the notorious Hell's Kitchen villain, Wilson Fisk, might be disappointed to learn that his portrayal by Vincent D’Onofrio is strictly limited to television. In a recent conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio revealed the challenges Marvel faces in using his character in films due to ownership rights. "The only thing I know is not positive," he said, explaining that it's "a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character" because of these legal entanglements.
D’Onofrio further clarified that his portrayal of Fisk is restricted to TV shows, dashing hopes for a standalone Wilson Fisk movie or appearances in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. This limitation could also impact potential projects such as a Charlie Cox-led Daredevil movie, where Fisk would naturally be expected to appear as the antagonist.
D’Onofrio first captivated audiences as Fisk, also known as Kingpin, in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil. The show, which ran for three seasons and concluded in 2018 with nearly 40 episodes, earned D’Onofrio widespread acclaim for his nuanced performance. He shared with IGN last month how he drew inspiration from the performances of actors like Harrison Ford, emphasizing the importance of humility in action scenes. "Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous," D’Onofrio said, citing examples like Gary Cooper in Sergeant York to illustrate how such authenticity enhances action sequences.
Currently, fans can catch D’Onofrio’s compelling portrayal of Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing weekly on Disney+ and set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025.
