If you're among the numerous fans of *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered* on PC, you've likely encountered more than a few hiccups. According to the tech experts at Digital Foundry, the remastered version is plagued by severe performance issues. Video producer Alex Battaglia described it as "perhaps one of the worst-running games I've ever tested for Digital Foundry."
"Even with the most powerful hardware, the stuttering is intolerable, severely impacting the gameplay to a point where I'm puzzled how it was deemed acceptable for release," Battaglia remarked. He further noted that beyond the stuttering, the game is unusually demanding on system resources, forcing players to lower settings just to maintain a decent frame rate.
Given these issues, it's not surprising that the most popular mod for *Oblivion Remastered* on Nexus Mods is P40L0’s ‘Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless),’ which has garnered an impressive 386,604 downloads in just under a week. Here’s what the mod aims to achieve:
“Definitive Unreal ‘Engine.ini’ changes designed to eliminate most stutters, boost performance and stability, reduce input latency, and enhance visual clarity without any loss in quality.”
P40L0 shared, "After months of testing with UE5, I've compiled my definitive custom ‘Engine.ini’ changes for the game. My objective was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible for CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD, to eliminate most stuttering, enhance performance, decrease input latency, and improve visual clarity by removing Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more, all without introducing visual degradation or causing glitches or crashes."

Feedback from users who have installed the mod has been overwhelmingly positive. "Stutter be gone! Simply amazing, thanks!" exclaimed chubbyd07. "This .ini is a miracle. I went from 15-20 fps outside the prison to a stable 65-70 fps. Running on a 3600XT and a 2060 with 20GB of RAM," added yeeto51. "Uhm, what the hell! My frame rate jumped from 60fps on High Preset around Waynon Priory to 90-110fps in the same area. Wizardry!" said BabaSmith.
Despite the PC version's issues, *Oblivion Remastered* continues to enjoy immense popularity, boasting a peak concurrent player count on Steam and over 4 million players across all platforms. On Steam, it holds a 'very positive' user review rating.
However, a recent hotfix released on April 25 has disrupted Microsoft Store players' ability to adjust UI settings for graphics, particularly upscaling and anti-aliasing. At the time of writing, those playing via Game Pass for PC are unable to modify these settings due to a UI issue. Bethesda is actively working on a solution.
