Ubisoft has established a new subsidiary focused on its Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six franchises, backed by a $1.25 billion investment from Tencent.
This announcement follows the recent release of Assassin's Creed Shadows, which has attracted over 3 million players. Ubisoft faced challenges with several high-profile setbacks, staff reductions, studio closures, and project cancellations leading up to the launch, with its stock price reaching an all-time low, placing significant pressure on the game’s success.
The new France-based subsidiary, valued at $4.3 billion, will concentrate on “developing sustainable, multi-platform game ecosystems,” with Tencent holding a 25% stake.
Ubisoft stated: “With increased funding and enhanced creative resources, the subsidiary will elevate the quality of single-player narrative experiences, expand multiplayer offerings with more frequent updates, introduce free-to-play elements, and incorporate advanced social features.”
The company will prioritize advancing its Ghost Recon and The Division franchises while strengthening its top-performing titles.
“Ubisoft is embarking on a transformative journey,” said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s co-founder and CEO.
“As we reshape our operational approach, this subsidiary marks a pivotal step toward agility and ambition. Our focus is on creating enduring game ecosystems, growing high-performing franchises, and developing innovative IPs powered by advanced technologies.
“By forming a dedicated subsidiary to lead development for three of our largest franchises, with Tencent as a minority investor, we are unlocking the value of our assets, bolstering our financial stability, and setting the stage for sustained growth and success. With its independent leadership, the subsidiary will transform these franchises into dynamic ecosystems.
“We are dedicated to building a leaner, more focused organization, empowering talented teams to elevate our brands, accelerate the growth of emerging franchises, and pioneer next-generation technologies and services. Our goal is to deliver captivating, memorable games that surpass player expectations and create exceptional value for shareholders and stakeholders.”
What does this mean in practice? The subsidiary encompasses teams working on Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia, along with Ubisoft’s existing game portfolio and projects in development. Current projects appear secure, with no further layoffs announced.
The deal is expected to finalize by the end of 2025.
