"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Limited to GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms"

By AvaMay 25,2025

The Nintendo GameCube is making a nostalgic return to the gaming scene, set to be integrated into the Nintendo Switch Online service with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this exciting update, a classic GameCube controller will be available, designed to enhance the retro gaming experience. However, some fine print in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer suggests that this new controller might be exclusively compatible with GameCube titles on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and not with other Switch 2 games.

A statement in the trailer specifies: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This indicates that the GameCube controller's functionality might be limited to GameCube games only. However, as noted by VGC, other Nintendo controllers with similar limitations have often been used beyond their stated compatibility, suggesting that players might find ways to use the GameCube controller more broadly. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America trailer, adding a layer of uncertainty.

Despite its potential limitations, the GameCube controller's design, complete with ample buttons, could still serve well for many Switch 2 games. This might be Nintendo's way of setting clear expectations or preventing confusion among users attempting to use it for non-GameCube games, such as using it as a mouse substitute.

For those not interested in the new GameCube controller, there's good news: the GameCube Controller adapter, popular from the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 via its USB port, ensuring continued use of existing accessories.

The classic GameCube controller and the updated Nintendo Switch Online library are set to launch with the Nintendo Switch 2, though pre-order dates remain unannounced. U.S. tariffs have caused some uncertainty around pre-orders. The new service promises to bring a host of classic 2000s-era games to subscribers, including fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all available at launch this summer. The library is expected to grow, with titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness teased for future inclusion.
