Exciting news for Street Fighter fans: a new movie is on the horizon, and it has found its director in the form of Kitao Sakurai. Known for his work on the offbeat comedy series, The Eric Andre Show, Sakurai is set to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic fighting game franchise. The film, which is being produced by Legendary Entertainment, has already been slated for a release on March 20, 2026. Capcom, the game's developer, is reportedly deeply involved in the project, ensuring that the essence of Street Fighter is well-represented on the big screen.
This upcoming adaptation marks another attempt to capture the magic of Street Fighter in cinema, following the memorable, albeit critically panned, 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia in a standout performance as M. Bison. While casting details for the new film remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their beloved characters come to life once more.
Originally, the project had Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me, attached to direct. However, they left the project last summer. The selection of Sakurai suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more surreal and comedic tone, aligning with the more whimsical aspects of the Street Fighter universe. As a fan, I'm thrilled at the prospect of this unique approach.
In the meantime, fans can dive into the latest installment of the game series, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the character Mai Shiranui. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
