Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, reflected on the challenge of continuing the hit comedy series after lead actor Steve Carell's departure two seasons before the show's conclusion.
Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, shared with Variety that Carell's exit didn't catch the cast off guard, as the actor was already pursuing prominent film roles. "We had seen it coming for quite a while," Wilson noted.
Even so, the series went through a transitional phase following Michael Scott's exit — a period Wilson described as "somewhat chaotic" behind the scenes.
"Once Steve left, there was a fair amount of chaos," Wilson explained. "We were working out the show’s new tone, figuring out who would step into the lead, and determining how to tell compelling stories without the comic engine of Michael Scott — and without one of America's finest comedic actors at the center of it all. That adjustment was a real challenge."
Carell had already built a film career before The Office, with roles in Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin filmed prior to his time as Dunder Mifflin's now-legendary regional manager.
Still, it was The Office that truly propelled Carell’s stardom — just as it did for Wilson and his co-star John Krasinski.

After Carell’s departure, the final seasons introduced new senior characters played by James Spader and Catherine Tate. The series ultimately wrapped with a final season focused on the original cast — culminating in Dwight’s wedding to longtime love Angela, a event highlighted by Carell’s brief, much-anticipated cameo.
Next up for fans is the new spinoff The Paper, scheduled to premiere this September. Co-created by producer Greg Daniels and starring Domhnall Gleeson, the series will use the same mockumentary style — this time set in a struggling local newspaper office — and will feature The Office’s Oscar in a recurring role.
Carell has already confirmed he won’t appear in The Paper, stating there would be "no real reason" for Michael Scott to return.
