Marvel's Spider-Man x Magic: The Gathering - First Card and Packaging Reveal

Arriving September 26th, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line after Final Fantasy, and the third overall following 2023's Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set. Unlike what you might expect, there won't be any preconstructed Commander decks; however, the cards within the Scene Box (pictured above) are not Standard-legal and are designed specifically for Commander play.
Following last year's Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others, Spider-Man marks Magic's first full set inspired by Marvel comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer, Max McCall, explains this choice: "Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he's encountered. A smaller product wouldn't allow for the inclusion of all the characters and moments we wanted."
"Picking characters from the Spider-Man canon as part of a wider set would leave far too many characters on the cutting room floor. We could probably have found room for Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-Spider-Man specific set, but there wouldn’t have been room for Aunt May,” McCall elaborates.
McCall describes designing a Universes Beyond set as "flipping the worldbuilding on its head." Typical Magic sets require cards to establish location and setting while maintaining enjoyable gameplay. However, with a character like Spider-Man, pre-existing familiarity allows for greater complexity: "When we make a card that speaks to great power bearing great responsibility, there’s room to add mechanical complexity because folks understand the story the card is telling. We don’t have to make Universes Beyond cards that are ‘simple’ - we just have to pick moments that are recognizable, and they’ll be easy for fans to understand."
Regarding the translation of Spider-Man into a Magic set, Head Designer Mark Rosewater explains that Magic's color pie "is robust enough to showcase heroism and villainy across all five colors." He cites Spider-Man as an example of a character spanning white, blue, and green (although the Scene Box version uses only the first two): "Spider-Man's obligation to use his powers to help people aligns with the white color pie. His scientific background and inventions are very blue. Finally, his powers are based on an animal, and his destiny within the Spider-Man universe is core green."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one comic run or series," Rosewater adds.
In addition to the Scene Box, the set includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs (all shown in the gallery). While preconstructed Commander decks are absent, Welcome Decks—introductory decks for new players—will return.
Following this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast recently announced an Avatar: The Last Airbender set. Two more in-universe sets will precede it: Tarkir: Dragonstorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
