At CES 2025, Sony unveiled exciting news for gamers and movie enthusiasts alike: a film adaptation of their highly successful game, Helldivers 2, is in the works. This project is a collaboration between PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures. Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, shared the news from the stage, stating, "We are pleased to announce that we have begun development on a movie based on our incredibly popular game Helldivers 2." While specific details about the film remain under wraps, fans can anticipate thrilling space battles that will bring the game's universe to life on the big screen.
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Studios, is a captivating shooter game that draws inspiration from the iconic Starship Troopers. The game has achieved remarkable success, becoming PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling project with an impressive 12 million copies sold within just 12 weeks of its release. The game's popularity surged even further with the introduction of the Illuminate update, which reintroduced a beloved faction of enemies from the original game.
In addition to Helldivers 2, Sony also announced that a movie based on the acclaimed game Horizon Zero Dawn is on the horizon. This project will see PlayStation Studios teaming up with Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the successful Uncharted adaptation in 2022. Asad Qizilbash provided the first glimpse into this exciting venture, saying, "We are just starting to work on the Horizon Zero Dawn movie, but we can already promise the audience: this world and its characters will be presented in a cinematic format for the first time."
