Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another significant milestone, securing its place as the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation in North America. With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has now surpassed $204 million at the domestic box office after earning $11 million during its fourth weekend across 3,582 locations. Globally, the movie has amassed an impressive total of $384.8 million.
The latest Sonic installment has outpaced its predecessor, Sonic 2, in the domestic market. However, it remains far behind the top-earning video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed an astounding $574,934,330 domestically and a staggering $1,359,146,628 worldwide. These numbers set a high bar that may prove challenging for future adaptations to surpass, though upcoming films like the Minecraft movie and the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie might come close.
Despite not reaching the top spot, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a resounding success for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4. Other notable video game movie adaptations include 2022's Uncharted, which earned $148,648,820 domestically, placing it fourth, and the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which raked in $146,066,470, securing the fifth position.
