Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Legal Notice to Stop

By ChloeMay 18,2025

Smash Together, an innovative yet unofficial dating app designed to unite Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, faced a significant setback just before its scheduled open beta launch on May 15. The developers announced on May 13 via a poignant Yoshi meme that they had received a cease-and-desist letter, which put a halt to their plans. The tweet, shared by the official SmashTogether account, read: "We got cease and desisted."

Although the developers did not explicitly mention the sender, many speculate that Nintendo, the owner of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, issued the cease-and-desist due to the app's direct association with their intellectual property. SmashTogether promoted itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," promising to help users find their "dream Doubles partner (in and out of Smash)" through a specialized matchmaking algorithm aimed at connecting players with their ideal "Smash Partner."

The app's interface included unique features tailored to the Smash Bros. community, such as sections for users to list their character of choice, or "main," and share notable wins. It also featured prompts with a Smash Bros. twist, like "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major," adding a playful yet competitive edge to the dating experience.

The concept of a dating app centered around a game like Super Smash Bros. likely raised concerns not only about IP and copyright infringement but also about the appropriateness of such a platform. As of now, there has been no indication from the SmashTogether team about pursuing alternative solutions that do not involve the Smash Bros. franchise. Fans and followers are left waiting to see what the future holds for this unique venture, while appreciating the developers' restraint in not indulging in any "smashing" puns throughout this ordeal.
