Samsung's latest SSD, the Samsung 990 Evo Plus PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid-state drive, is now on sale, offering gamers and tech enthusiasts a chance to upgrade their systems at a fantastic price. You can grab the 2TB model for just $129.99, or if you need more space, the 4TB version is available for an even better deal at $249.99. These prices are $40-$70 less than the Samsung 990 Pro, and for most gamers, the performance difference is negligible.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an exceptional choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It exceeds Sony's minimum speed recommendation for the PS5, with sequential speeds reaching up to 7,250 MB/s read and 6,300 MB/s write. While it's faster than the non-Pro 990 Evo, it falls just short of the 990 Pro's performance. The key difference is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive, which doesn't affect PS5 performance. For gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate for the lack of DRAM, drawing minimally from your system's RAM. Most gamers won't notice any difference in performance between the 990 Evo Plus and the 990 Pro.
It's worth noting that the Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a pre-installed heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and produces less heat than older SSDs. This means it should work well in a PS5 without thermal throttling, though adding a heatsink for extra peace of mind is an option, costing an additional $7.
