Pokémon Starters: A Guide to Gens 1-9

If you're a fan of the Pokémon series, you'll know that each generation brings along a fresh set of starter Pokémon—always including one Grass type, one Fire type, and one Water type. Across nine generations, this adds up to 27 starter lines in total. Here’s a comprehensive look at all the starter options across the generations.

Generation I Starter Pokémon

Gen 1 starters Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

The original trio from the Kanto region—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—made their debut in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow. They’ve since become iconic and reappeared in various remakes like Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee. You can also encounter them in titles such as Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and Pokémon X and Y.

Generation II Starter Pokémon

Gen 2 starters Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

From the Johto region came Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. These starters also appear in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. They’ve been catchable in other games through features like the QR Scanner in Pokémon Sun and Moon. Additionally, Cyndaquil is available as a starter in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Generation III Starter Pokémon

Gen 3 starters Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

The Hoenn trio—Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip—debuted in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. These starters reappear in the remakes Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They can also be found in other mainline games and DLC.

Sinnoh’s starter trio—Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup—are available in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. These starters also appear in the remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Despite being native to Sinnoh, none are starters in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, though you can catch them in the game and other titles.

Unova’s starter trio—Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott—appear in Pokémon Black and White and their sequels. Oshawott is also a starter in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. You can catch all three Unova starters in other mainline games and DLC.

Generation VI Starter Pokémon

Gen 6 starters Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Kalos’ starter trio—Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—are available in Pokémon X and Y. Froakie’s final evolution, Greninja, gained a special form called Ash-Greninja, introduced in the Pokémon Sun and Moon demo and transferable to the main games.
