Pokémon Go Director on Scopely: No Need for Fan Concern

By SebastianMar 29,2025

The recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the team behind Monopoly Go, has sparked a wave of concern among fans. Worries range from potential increases in ads to issues surrounding personal data privacy. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director for Pokémon Go, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these fears.

In the interview, Steranka praises Scopely and asserts a strong alignment between Niantic and the Monopoly Go developer's visions. He confidently stated that intrusive ads would not be introduced into Pokémon Go under Scopely's stewardship. Addressing privacy concerns head-on, Steranka was clear: Niantic would not share or sell player data to third parties. He concluded by emphasizing that the transition to working under Scopely would have minimal impact on Niantic's operations.

Pokémon Go and Scopely Acquisition**If it ain't broke...** While it's understandable to anticipate some corporate influence, I personally believe that Scopely will not heavily alter Pokémon Go's operations. The game has been, and continues to be, highly successful. A more significant business focus might be Niantic's new spin-off team, which is dedicated to exploring further applications of AR technology.

Steranka also highlighted the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in Pokémon Go's decision-making process. This means that any action The Pokémon Company would not endorse is unlikely to be implemented now or in the future.
