PlayStation Productions Unveils Multiple Game Adaptations
Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and More
PlayStation Productions dominated the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 on January 7th, announcing several new game adaptations. The announcements kicked off with Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new anime series produced by Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Crunchyroll confirmed an exclusive premiere in 2027, with Takanobu Mizumo directing and Gen Urobuchi handling the story composition. Sony Music will contribute the music and soundtrack.
Next, Asad Qizilbash (Head of PlayStation Productions) and Ashley Brucks (President of Screen Gems) revealed upcoming films based on Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (handled by Columbia Pictures). Details remain scarce for both projects. They followed this announcement with a teaser for the Until Dawn film adaptation, slated for release on April 25, 2025.
Finally, Neil Druckmann took the stage. After briefly discussing Naughty Dog's upcoming title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, he unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, adapting the storyline from The Last of Us Part II and introducing new characters like Abby and Dina.
With numerous projects underway, PlayStation Productions is clearly expanding its reach into the world of videogame adaptations. Success here could pave the way for even more franchises to make the leap to other mediums.
Previously Released Adaptations from PlayStation Productions
This isn't PlayStation's first foray into video game adaptations. Early examples include the Resident Evil film series (starting in 2002) and the 2006 Silent Hill adaptation. While fan reception for these films was mixed, they were commercially successful.
PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, focuses on adapting PlayStation-exclusive games. Its notable successes include the 2022 Uncharted film (starring Tom Holland) and the 2023 Gran Turismo movie—both box office hits.
The 2023 Twisted Metal series on Peacock, a post-apocalyptic action-comedy, also falls under their umbrella. While not as critically acclaimed as The Last of Us, season two wrapped production in late 2024, though a release date remains unannounced.
Beyond the CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions is also working on film adaptations of Days Gone, an Uncharted sequel, and a God of War TV series, although details on these projects are still limited.
Given Sony and PlayStation Productions' current trajectory, it's highly likely that more popular PlayStation franchises will be adapted in the future, driven by both fan demand and commercial viability.
