The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5 console, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the middle. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by allowing you to stream games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains the same features as the DualSense, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that replaces the touchpad. The Portal enables you to stream games even when you're away from home, provided you have access to a very stable and fast internet connection. It's important to note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it's strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, requiring a PS5 to function.
Excitingly, you no longer need a PS5 to play games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a feature allowing owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means Portal owners can connect either to their PS5 or to Sony’s cloud servers, which have benefited from recent quality-of-life beta updates launched in April. Opting for the cloud servers grants access to over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To use this feature, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which at $18 a month is a more cost-effective option than buying a $500 console and additional games.
It's worth mentioning that the PlayStation Portal isn't the only way to stream your PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home. You can achieve similar functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device, including other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, this method is more complex to set up and misses out on some of the DualSense's features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal is the most surprising device I've ever come away from loving after initially approaching it with skepticism. It offers a vastly superior experience compared to using your phone with an attached controller, and it performs much better than I expected. I truly appreciate the freedom it provides to play my PS5 games from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage, especially when my family is using the TV to play the Switch. However, it's important to remember that it's not a standalone device and requires a PlayStation 5 to function. The biggest drawbacks preventing the Portal from being a truly exceptional device are its current inability to access WiFi networks that require a web browser to log in, and its lack of Bluetooth support for audio. Despite these limitations, it's a fantastic device that offers the best current solution for PlayStation Remote Play. Without these issues, I'd consider it a must-own for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or needs to share the household TV."
