Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to end January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, transitioning then to an open queue format. This positive reception fuels speculation about its potential permanent integration into the game.
The 6v6 mode's initial run, part of last November's Overwatch Classic event, showcased its immense popularity. Despite a short initial run, it quickly became a top-played mode. Its return in Season 14, initially scheduled for December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its appeal. This second playtest, while omitting some classic hero abilities, maintained the engaging 12-player matches.
Continued strong player interest prompted the extension, as announced by Keller on Twitter. While the precise end date remains unconfirmed, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. Until mid-season, it will remain a role queue mode. Afterwards, it shifts to open queue, mandating 1-3 heroes per class per team.
The Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The sustained success of 6v6 isn't surprising; it's been a highly sought-after feature since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch. The shift to 5v5 was a major departure from the original, impacting gameplay in ways that resonate differently with various players.
However, the extended playtest reignites hope for its permanent return, potentially even within Overwatch 2's competitive playlist. This possibility hinges on the outcome of the ongoing playtests.
