The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be in high demand. To ensure that dedicated Switch players can secure their pre-orders, Nintendo has introduced some unique measures through the official Nintendo store.
On the My Nintendo Store, users with a Nintendo Account can register their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system and select accessories. Those who express interest will receive an invitation email when it's their turn to pre-order, which will be valid for 72 hours. However, to be eligible for this invitation, you must have been an active user of your current Switch console and a member of Nintendo Switch Online.
According to the fine print on the site, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." These invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email address linked to the Nintendo Account that registered interest. Additionally, there is a one-per-account limit for the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Customers can express interest in either the base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.
Once an order is placed, it will be shipped after purchase with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo clarifies that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times."
These measures appear to be aimed at ensuring that the Nintendo Switch 2 goes to genuine fans and players, rather than scalpers looking to resell the console online. The issue of scalping has plagued the releases of popular products like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Valve's successful implementation of a similar queue system for the Steam Deck, which tied purchases to existing Steam accounts, may have inspired Nintendo's approach. This system should help long-time Switch owners avoid the chaos typically associated with securing a pre-order on launch day.
While the My Nintendo Store provides one avenue for pre-ordering the Switch 2, there will undoubtedly be other options available. However, these measures are a welcome step towards ensuring that dedicated fans can get their hands on the new console without the added stress of competing with scalpers.
