Nintendo has officially announced an upcoming pricing update for the original Nintendo Switch in Canada—more than eight years after its initial launch. This change will affect all models of the original console, including the standard Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. The adjustment, described by Nintendo of Canada as being “based on market conditions,” will also extend to physical and digital games, accessories, Nintendo Switch Online memberships, and even amiibo figurines.
The company confirmed that the newly released Switch 2 will not be impacted by this price change. However, since many games and peripherals are cross-compatible between generations, Switch 2 owners may still feel the financial ripple from increased accessory and software pricing.
What’s Changing and When?
Starting July 1, updated prices will appear on the official Nintendo Canada online store. While exact figures haven’t been disclosed yet, the move aligns with broader economic pressures—including ongoing financial uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs. Prior to the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo temporarily paused pre-orders in both the U.S. and Canada to assess tariff-related costs, later increasing prices on select Switch 2 accessories. Why This Strategy Makes Sense for Nintendo
In light of potential profit losses estimated at "tens of billions of yen," Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa previously noted that raising the Switch 2's base price could reduce demand. By focusing the increase on legacy hardware, digital content, and subscription services like Nintendo Switch Online, the company avoids headline-grabbing increases on its newest console—while still offsetting global economic pressures.
If you're in Canada and planning to renew your Nintendo Switch Online membership or purchase accessories or games, now might be the time to act—before the new prices go live.
