"Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues"

By EricMay 27,2025

Nintendo has addressed compatibility concerns regarding its newly unveiled GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it with modern games on the system. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, with initial warnings indicating its compatibility was limited to Nintendo GameCube games available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro library.

In a recent clarification, Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for playing GameCube games within the Nintendo Classics collection. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players could encounter difficulties due to the absence of certain buttons and features that are standard in newer controllers.

Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life. They added, "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games."
