MultiVersus Shutdown: A Fond Farewell to a Unique Fighter

By AudreyJul 29,2025

MultiVersus, the 2024 free-to-play crossover fighting game, will soon go offline permanently.

Player First Games revealed in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its final chapter, with the game set to close at 5pm PDT (12 noon EDT) on May 30, 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery deemed it a significant setback, noting in a November 2024 financial call that MultiVersus underperformed, leading to a $100 million writedown in its gaming division. This followed a $300 million loss after the lackluster debut of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January.

A month after this news, Warner Bros. canceled its Wonder Woman game and closed three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and MultiVersus developer Player First Games.

In a thread titled "Tomorrow MultiVersus shuts down, what are your final thoughts on the game," hundreds of players shared their cherished memories.

"MultiVersus was a vision brought to life. Its fast-paced, team-focused 2v2 gameplay emphasized synergy," one player wrote. "The voice acting was stellar, with iconic talents like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza as Bugs and Marvin, plus dynamic character interactions."

"Though some character choices, like Banana Guard or Shaggy inspired by Ultra Instinct Shaggy, were odd, most movesets were creative and inspired. There’ll never be another game like MultiVersus."

"The beta in 2022 was unforgettable. Its high-energy gameplay had me hooked," shared another. "I played it non-stop when I was sick. I’ll miss it, but I hope a sequel brings it back someday."

"This game will always have a special place in my heart, right beside PlayStation All-Stars," reflected one player, while another noted: "Tom and Jerry were among the most unique and joyful fighters I’ve ever played, reigniting my passion for fighting games."

Some remain hopeful, but most players acknowledge its end, citing "the complex IP challenges" of reviving it. Still, a few are working to preserve it after the servers shut down.

"MultiVersus may not be a party staple, but its innovative team-based battles made it a standout online platform fighter," we wrote in IGN's MultiVersus review, awarding it an 8.
