Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage

By GraceMar 15,2025

Get ready to fight! The next chapter in the Mortal Kombat saga is almost upon us, and we've just gotten our first glimpse of a key addition to the cast: Johnny Cage, played by the formidable Karl Urban.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, unveiled a fantastically over-the-top poster featuring Urban as the Hollywood-esque fighter. The poster itself is a clever parody of a cheesy action movie, complete with the quintessential flaming motorcycle jump—a perfect visual representation of Cage's flamboyant style.

Mortal Kombat 2 serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, picking up where Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), and Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) left off. Joining the returning cast are several newcomers, including Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage is sure to add a fresh layer of charisma and comedic relief to the already action-packed franchise.

While plot details remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video games provides a wealth of potential storylines for the sequel. The first film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat tournament and the long-standing rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Initially planned for a theatrical release, the first Mortal Kombat film ultimately premiered on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025, promising a big-screen experience for fans.

Our review of the first film awarded it a 7 out of 10, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles.” Get ready for more!
