Gunn Confirms: Superman's Flight, Zero CGI

By PeytonMar 12,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's expression in a recent TV spot. The spot showcased new footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The internet buzzed over Superman's seemingly still face amidst the windswept hair and cape. Some attributed this to subpar CGI.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contained no CGI on Superman's face. He explained the effect is due to the close-up wide-angle lens used and assured viewers that both the Svalbard location and David Corenswet's performance were entirely real. The “knowing smirk” is, therefore, entirely natural.

Despite Gunn’s explanation, debate continues, with some comparing the shot to similar scenes featuring Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman movie remains high. The film, the first in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, releases July 11, 2025.
