"Guide to Obtaining Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft"

By PatrickMay 03,2025

Introduced in the *Minecraft* 1.20.5 “Armored Paws” update, the Armadillo is a fascinating addition to the game, found across various warm biomes. This passive mob, sporting a protective layer of "Scutes," plays a crucial role in crafting the innovative Wolf Armor. Here’s a detailed guide on how to obtain Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft:

Armadillos thrive in warm environments and can be spotted in groups of two or three. They have a unique defense mechanism where they roll into a ball if approached too quickly. To prevent this, players should move slowly and cautiously.

Keep an eye out for Armadillos in these biomes:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

There are two primary methods to collect Armadillo Scutes:

1. Watch and Wait:

Similar to how Chickens drop Eggs, Armadillos will drop a Scute every 5-10 minutes. This passive method requires no tools or effort, making it an attractive option. However, it can be time-consuming, especially if you need to craft multiple sets of Wolf Armor.

2. Brushing:

The preferred method for many players, brushing involves using a crafted Brush to gently obtain one Scute per brushing session. Brushes are typically used for investigating suspicious sand or gravel but work wonderfully on Armadillos as well.

In the Java Edition of *Minecraft*, an unenchanted Brush can be used on an Armadillo four times before breaking, while in Bedrock Edition, it can be used five times. Players can repair two damaged Brushes using an Anvil, and if the Brushes are enchanted, the combined item will retain both enchantments.

Brushes can be enchanted with:

  • Unbreaking
  • Mending
  • Curse of Vanishing

To craft a Brush, players will need:

  • A Feather
  • A Copper Ingot
  • A Stick

These items should be placed in the center column of the Crafting Table, from top to bottom in the order listed above.

To brush an Armadillo, approach slowly to avoid triggering its defensive roll, and use the appropriate button to brush the mob. With enough Brushes, players can gather a significant number of Scutes, ready to be crafted into Wolf Armor.
