Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead! Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as the vampire slayer. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar is reportedly in talks for a recurring appearance.
Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this reboot.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original *Buffy* and its spin-off, *Angel*.Plot details remain scarce, aside from the central focus on a new Slayer and the possibility of Gellar's return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural creatures. Aided by her friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles, Buffy battled evil for seven seasons (1997-2003). The story continued through a spin-off series, Angel, and subsequent canonical comic books.
