FTC Fails to Block Microsoft's Activision Blizzard Acquisition

By AlexanderMay 21,2025

Microsoft has secured another significant victory against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in its effort to acquire Activision Blizzard. The FTC's attempt to block Microsoft's monumental $69 billion deal was denied by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, solidifying the purchase that was originally announced in late 2022, according to Reuters. This decision by a three-judge panel marked the end of the FTC's challenge against the July 2023 decision that permitted Microsoft to complete its acquisition.

The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has been under intense scrutiny for over three years. Early opposition came from several U.S. Senators, who raised concerns about the ongoing consolidation within the tech industry as Microsoft expanded its portfolio. As the acquisition progressed, both competitors and gamers expressed worries that popular franchises like Call of Duty might become exclusive to Xbox platforms. However, Microsoft reassured the public that it had no interest in barring certain franchises behind lengthy exclusivity periods.
